Project description The community of Wüstenrot is tackling the challenges of the energy transition with scientific support. It aims to covers all its energy requirements using renewable energy technologies such as biogas, geothermal heat, heat pumps, PV arrays and solar thermal energy – all of it generated/collected on the 3000 hectares that make up the community. Any surplus will be sold on the European Energy Exchange. The brief given to the EnVisaGe project team requires the use of innovative 3D GIS planning tools to develop and implement an energy use plan for Wüstenrot. Taking analyses of demand and potential supply as their basis, the team will investigate a variety of scenarios which will then feed into a comprehensive roadmap. In addition to intelligent load management concepts and grid expansion strategies, the roadmap will be underpinned by finance schemes for each individual measure. The results of all technological and user-oriented analyses and assessments will be combined to form a set of planning guidelines which can be transferred to other communities characterized by similar structures. A pilot project in the form of a new energy-plus housing estate will be used for the practical, small-scale demonstration of the energy-plus approach.
