Project description "The aim of the research project is to determine the potential of increasing the energy efficiency and the potential of providing ancillary services of flexibility in data centers for Baden-Württemberg based on a technology analysis. The focus of the project will be on electricity, heat and cold in data centres as well as the integration of data centres in their surrounding environment. Data centres are the infrastructural basis of economic activities in nearly all sectors. Against this background a tool for the location analysis will be developed. This tool will be designed to support operators of data centres to find the best location for data centres and to support policy to identify future needs for action. The derived differentiation characteristics for data centers from the initial performed technology analysis, the identified sustainable indicators, the potentials for improvement of energy efficiency and the potentials to provide flexibility will be further used to identify potentials for Baden-Württemberg (e.g. quantify the potential savings in greenhouse gas emissions, the effect on employment and energy savings). To ensure that the results and the analysis instruments are transferred into real applications and used in concrete data centres, the activities and results are constantly communicated to stakeholders and the public.
