Project description Architectural-historical concerns and energy efficiency both need to be taken into consideration during the planning process. The aim of this project is therefore to raise the energy budget of historic districts to a competitive level while simultaneously factoring in the issue of architectural-aesthetic quality. This will involve the application of an overall strategy that takes heat supply, building refurbishment and urban planning into account. Researchers will examine the extent to which specific approaches to energy-efficient refurbishment can be matched to planning tools such as design manuals, bye-laws and protection orders governing permissible features. Research into those tools will feed into the development of implementation strategies.
