Project description Urban energy systems are complex structures that require intelligent communication and control strategies. Due to an increasingly decentralized and fluctuating energy generation and rising interaction among producers, storage providers and consumers, intelligent planning and management is necessary to adapt to short-term load fluctuations as well as to diminishing energy demand due to increased energy and resource efficiency. The combination of electric and thermal networks and storage and the activation of flexible demand management options to consumers, require the development of innovative cross-cutting approaches and process analyses to provide sustainable and resource efficient solutions and reduce implementation barriers. Eight research universities of Applied Sciences cooperate with universities, research partners, companies and communities to develop urban simulation, automation and optimization tools with associated business models and use them in five case studies.
