Bachelor programme: KlimaEngineering (Climate Engineering)

The bachelor programme in KlimaEngineering (Climate Engineering) is a new interdisciplinary programme at HFT Stuttgart. It innovatively combines a range of skills from our Architecture, Building Physics and Energy Technology programmes, promotes interaction and sees students graduate as a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.). Programme content is geared towards the increasingly demanding energy efficiency and engineering requirements that characterize modern architecture and urban planning. The challenges involved call for sustainable architecture which blends integrated technical solutions with quantitative evaluation techniques.

The bachelor programme in KlimaEngineering (Climate Engineering) aims to empower students to understand and contextualize complex issues, take a variety of perspectives into account and use a methodical approach to develop practically oriented, pioneering solutions. Emphasis is placed on seeing issues in their architectural, constructional, energetic and thermodynamic context and incorporating the resultant insights into the design process. The interdisciplinary projects carried out in the 3rd and 4th semesters are supervised by numerous tutors and are conducted together with students of architecture (Bachelor and Master level). They represent an important part of the programme. Students are given a planning assignment which requires them to complete all design phases from initial studies to structural engineering and building services. They also use simulation tools to optimize their building. Tasks taken from the fields of building services, building physics, architecture, structural engineering, light planning and simulation tools combine to form a central project which is approached and thought through from a variety of specialist angles. This enables students to identify where fields overlap and develop targeted solutions to the resultant challenges. Tasks are tackled in groups in order to give students the opportunity to develop both their personal skills and their ability to work as part of a team.

The programme ends with a bachelor thesis written as a supervised piece of stand-alone work. It requires students to prove their ability to use appropriate academic methods. These dDissertations may be written in cooperation with industrial partners, firms of planning consultants or research institutes. Such cooperation gives students a smoother start to professional life, which in many cases will begin at a firm of consultant planners or engineers, a public authority or in one of a variety of industrial sectors. HFT Stuttgart also offers a number of master's degrees which build on the undergraduate KlimaEngineering (Climate Engineering) programme.
