Master programme Civil Engineering/Tunnel Building

Profile  <<
Start of degree: In the summer and winter semester
Application deadline: 15th July (winter semester)
15th January (summer semester)
Period of studies: 3 Semesters
Part time degree possible
Degree: Master of Engineering (M.Eng.)

Short description / Profile of the programme <<

The Master programme in Civil Engineering/Tunnel Building is a practical programme, which builds on a first professionally qualifying degree as a civil engineer with constructive-geotechnical focus. It is aimed at civil engineers who see a new, interesting challenge and therefore a particular professional development possibility when dealing with the subsurface for every construction measure. The degree can either be completed full time over three semesters or extra occupationally, part time over five semesters.

Apart from a complementation on general construction areas, thorough, scientifically founded knowledge about the mechanical behaviour of soil and rock including ground water are also taught and prepared for the analysis of the interaction between building ground and structure. The numerical procedures in practice today take on particular significance here. Further important components are – in particular in tunnel building – construction procedures and use of machines as well as measurement and observation methods. The programme has a very well equipped laboratory for geotechnics.

Structure of the programme  <<

The complex matter is taught in various teaching and learning forms, in a practical way, and project related work is particularly important. Apart from the purely subject specific competences, the skills of interdisciplinary work and working in complex systems will be specifically promoted. Supervised independent learning forms an important component. The classes take place on Monday and Tuesday in weekly rotation for the full time students, and there are also around seven weekend blocks (Fri/Sat). Part time students run through these units alternately, approximately half and half in two academic years. The final semester is almost identical for both options.

Final paper  <<

With the Master thesis the students prepare a practically oriented written final paper about a demanding and extensive problem from the topic area of the programme independently and according to scientific methods, within a specified period of time (in full time course 4 months, in part time course 6 months editing time). Thereby they use the current methods of geotechnics and the neighbouring areas of structural engineering and reflect the content learned previously in the degree. The most important results are to be presented in a clearly comprehensible and clearly divided manner, in a public presentation to the faculty lasting around 20 minutes, with subsequent scientific discussion.

Requirements  <<

For entry into the Master programme an above average degree from a university course with a period of studies of at least three years at a German university or an equivalent foreign university, in the subject of civil engineering, as well as good German and English language skills are required. A subject related professional role as a civil engineer in an engineering office and/or planning office or a relevant construction company would be advantageous. Applicants with Bachelor degree must prove at least 210 credit points according to ECTS (CP) from a Civil Engineering course.

International partner universities <<

For students of the HFT Stuttgart there are contacts with over 70 partner universities worldwide. You can find an up to date list on the home page. The academic international office of the university is able to help you prepare and plan a stay abroad. There is the opportunity - according to the course -of completing a study semester abroad.

Accreditation <<

The accreditation council of ASIIN assessed the Master programme in Civil Engineering/Tunnel Building in an external audit. This was successfully accredited. Therefore the programme in Civil Engineering/Tunnel Building corresponds to the highest qualitative requirements in the new two stage European education system in polytechnics and universities. The Master's degree also opens up access to higher service.
