Prospective Students

Bachelor programme Surveying and Geoinformatics

Profile  <<
Start of degree: In the summer and winter semester
Application deadline: 15th July (winter semester), 15th January (summer semester)
Period of studies: 7 semesters
Degree: Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.)
Programme language: German
Master programmes: Surveying, Photogrammetry and Geoinformatics, Urban Planning

Short description / Profile of the programme  <<

The practical programme trains engineers who are especially qualified for the geometrical realisation and supervision of construction projects, development and continuous updating of digital maps, plans and 3D models, such as the well known navigation systems and interactive maps. There are further important fields of activity in land management for urban planning, agriculture and conservation and in quality assurance in the industry e.g. automotive sector. All activities are closely linked with the management and analysis of space oriented data.
Programme language is German.

Structure of the programme <<

In the 1st and 2nd semester the principles of surveying, GPS and geoinformation systems as well as scientific content and key qualifications are taught. The latter prepares students right at the beginning of the degree for later seminars, project presentations and possible stays abroad.

In the 3rd and 4th semesters the specialist knowledge will be extended and deepened. Laser scanning, photogrammetry, geodesic networks, adjustment computation and web technology are key words here. In addition an insight is given into civil engineering. An integrated surveying project, in which contents from several modules are to be used, round off this part of the degree.

In the 5th semester one or several study projects will be completed in practice. This semester is optimally suited to collecting experience abroad.

In the 6th and 7th semester planning, land use and development, assessment of value and governmental surveying are part of the curriculum. Further important qualifications for engineers are taught in law, economy and management modules shortly before career entry. Students can also choose individual majors in this study section. For example when working on an interdisciplinary geoinformatics project, the selection of major modules with current themes from geodesics and the selection of a scientific project and the Bachelor thesis. Both papers are to be presented in seminars.

With the final Bachelor thesis the students should show that they are in a position to work on the selected project independently in a specified period of time and successfully complete it. Themes arise from the research work of the professors or from co-operation with practice. Student suggestions for the final paper, e.g. in collaboration with practice, are also accepted. The Bachelor thesis can also of course be written at partner universities or companies abroad.

The Bachelor thesis must be presented and defended in a seminar. As a direct preparation for the Bachelor thesis, a theme related project must be carried out beforehand, in which research is carried out and scientific working methods are practised.

Prospects <<

For the Bachelor of Engineering (B. Eng.) in Surveying and Geoinformatics there are a multitude of career possibilities as an employee or owner of a surveying or engineering office, in planning and consulting offices, in public service on a federal, state or regional level, in construction companies, in industry (e.g. mechanical engineering, plant engineering), in device development, in software companies or in research institutions. The employment market needs graduates.

For engineers in Surveying and Geoinformatics there are special chances to work abroad, in particular in developing and threshold countries. In addition to the three Master programme at HFT Stuttgart there are further qualifications both in Germany and abroad available to graduates of Master programme.

International partner universities <<

For students at HFT Stuttgart there are contacts to over 70 partner universities worldwide. The academic international office of the university is available to help you to prepare and plan a semester abroad.

There are also a multitude of contacts with foreign companies worldwide in this area of studies, which cover all areas of the degree and are preferentially used by students in the 5th semester for study projects in practice and for final papers.

Study and work<<

A Trainee-programme is offered to our students to earn money related to a specific field, to support their practical experience and encourage networking. Therefore employers of several companies and institutions offer jobs and contact time / lecture-planning is considered by the the HFT.

Accreditation <<

The programme of studies in Surveying and Geoinformatics was successfully accredited by the ASIIN (Accreditationsagentur für Studiengänge der Ingenieurwissenschaften, der Informatik, der Naturwissenschaften und Mathematik e.V. [Accreditation agency for courses of studies in engineering sciences, IT, natural sciences and mathematics.])
