Leave
Upon application, students may be granted leave in special cases. In general, leave may be granted for up to two semesters in total. Retroactive leave for a completed semester is excluded. Leave must be applied for before commencement of lectures in the respective semester. The reasons for leave must be substantiated by suitable attestations.
Please note:
- Leave is generally not possible in the first semester.
- Semesters of leave do not count as study semesters. The number of study semesters or a semester of leave can, however, affect BAföG loans and child benefits.
- Semesters of leave are not subject to tuition fees.
- Students on leave do not participate in the autonomy of the university.
- Students on leave are not entitled to attend courses or use university facilities (with the exception of library facilities and the computer centre).
- It is not possible to sit exams or pre-examinations, except for students on maternity leave or parental leave.
- Practical activities during the semester of leave cannot be credited towards the Supervised Practical Study Project.
Important reasons for leave include, for example:
- Study at a foreign university or language school
- Acceptance in a practical activity that serves the study objective
- Military or alternative national service
- Forthcoming birth and subsequent care of a child
- An illness that prevents attendance of courses and delivery of the expected performance
- Serving a sentence
- Care of dependent relatives
Please note that the full semester and administration charges are still due for a semester of leave.
Exmatriculation
Exmatriculation signifies deletion of the membership of the student with the university (see Section 62 of the Landeshochschulgesetz, LHG). Exmatriculation is generally effective from the end of the semester in which it is declared. Retroactive exmatriculation is impermissible. Upon presentation of special reasons, it can be declared with immediate effect.
A notice or certificate of exmatriculation will be issued. In the case of students subject to compulsory health insurance, the exmatriculation must be reported to the responsible health insurance company by the university. Should you have taken out a student loan, you must cancel it in writing with the Landesbank should you be exmatriculated.
